In the United States medical marijuana dispensaries can be divided into two types – regulated and unregulated. Among regulated dispensaries, the start-up costs for businesses launched in the past three years were about 775 thousand U.S. dollars as of 2017. Among non-regulated dispensaries, the start-up costs were lower at about 100 thousand U.S. dollars.

The medical marijuana industry

In some states the number of medical marijuana dispensaries in the U.S. is expected to increase in coming years to meet the demand for medical marijuana. Currently, California and Michigan have the largest number of medical marijuana patients in the United States. Meanwhile, Colorado and Ohio have the largest number of medical marijuana dispensaries among all U.S. states.

The cannabidiol industry

There are several cannabis-based products that comprise the total marijuana industry in the U.S. Recreational marijuana and hemp comprise the non-medical marijuana industry. Within the medical marijuana industry cannabidiol (CBD) is particularly interesting because it has huge medical potential without the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). According to recent data, the CBD pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. is expected to grow dramatically in the coming years. Accordingly, regular non-medical adult use of CBD is also expected to increase in coming years.
