Number of Papa Johns restaurants in the U.S. 2023, by state and type

With 310 store locations, the state of Texas had the most Papa Johns restaurants in the United States in 2023. The pizza chain operated four restaurants in Maine and three in New Hampshire, while Vermont was the only state not to have a Papa Johns store. 

Domestic market is key for Papa Johns

In 2023, Papa Johns had 3,220 restaurants in its domestic market of the United States, the majority of which operated as delivery and carryout stores. Few Papa Johns restaurants offer a dine-in service. The pizza chain had 531 company-owned restaurants in 2023, which generated sales revenues of around 726 million U.S. dollars in 2023. 

Customers seek service improvements

Based on retail sales in the United States, Papa Johns was ranked behind Little Caesars, Pizza Hut, and Domino’s Pizza. The company was also ranked fourth in a ranking of pizza restaurants by the number of units, again behind competitors Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza, and Little Caesars in 2022. Though the number of Papa Johns units has grown worldwide, the number of domestic units operated in the United States declined slightly that year.
