Number of private equity and venture capital funds in Luxembourg 2000-2017

This statistic shows the total number of private equity and venture capital funds in Luxembourg from 2000 to 2017. Private equity is a form of equity, shares representing ownership or an interest in an entity, that is not publicly traded. Typically, the investors are high net worth individuals and large institutional investors. It can take different shapes, such as a management buyout, management buying (MBI), a divisional buyout or venture capital for starting companies through an angel investor.

Luxembourg has different legal structures to set up a regulated venture capital or private equity firm, such such as the investment company in risk capital (SICAR), the specialized investment fund (SIF) or the reserved alternative investment fund (RAIF). Nonetheless, the total number all the funds together was roughly 635 at the end of 2017.

Supplementary notes

The figures provided concern regulated funds, which then can take shape within three types of Luxembourg regulation. The source provides the following definitions for these regulations:

* SIF: UCIs other than UCITS are governed by Part II of the Luxembourg law of 17 December 2010, unless they are governed by a specific product law. They qualify as alternative investment funds (AIFs) in the meaning of the Luxembourg law of 12 July 2013 on alternative investment fund managers (AIFM law).
* SIF: Specialized Investment Fund, a collective investment scheme governed by the law of 13 February 2007 on specialized investment funds, as amended.
* SICAR: Société d’Investissement en Capital à Risque, investment company investing in risk capital only.
