Venture capital investments originating from Benelux as share of GDP 2017-2021
Venture capital investments originating from private equity firms in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands were higher than in most European countries in 2021. Private equity is a form of equity, shares representing ownership or an interest in an entity, that is not publicly traded. Typically, the investors are high net worth individuals and large institutional investors. It can take different shapes, such as a management buyout, management buying (MBI), a divisional buyout or venture capital for starting companies through an angel investor. In Luxembourg, venture capital investments reached a percentage of approximately 0.25 percent of GDP. In the first half of 2017, private equity deals in the Netherlands reached a total value of 14.8 billion euros.
