Supplementary notes

*According to the source, ‘Halt the Hate’ documents alleged hate crimes in India starting from 28 September 2015, when Mohammad Akhlaq, a Muslim resident of Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, was murdered in his home by a mob claiming that he had eaten beef. Since then, media reports have begun to increasingly report instances of alleged hate crimes.

The term ‘hate crime’ is generally applied to criminal acts against people based on their real or perceived membership of a particular group, such as caste, religion or ethnicity. The project draws on reports in English and Hindi newspapers through key word searches. Each incident of an alleged hate crime is categorized to reflect its location (including the district), the age and gender of the victim, the nature of the crime, and the identity of the victim, among other details. The data is available for download under the ‘Data’ section of the website for public use.

The incidents reported are not meant to provide a comprehensive picture of all alleged hate crimes that may have occurred since September 2015. Instead, the project aims to provide an insight into the depth and breadth of the problem, as it relies on secondary media sources. Each incident listed is based on media sources, hence, some details may vary across different reports.
