Diversifying the grid
Solar energy plays a pivotal role in the MENA region's renewable energy landscape. Solar photovoltaics was the leading technology for renewable energy additions in MENA between 2022 and 2026. With some of the world's highest solar irradiance levels, countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE are investing substantially in solar infrastructure. Solar energy will make up almost 70 percent of Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy, according to the 2030 National Renewable Energy Program targets.Wind energy is also making strides in the MENA region, with several countries investing in wind farms and projects. Countries such as Egypt and Jordan have been actively developing wind energy infrastructure, capitalizing on their favorable wind conditions. According to the UN, Egypt’s Gabal El Zeit wind farm is the region’s largest based on generation capacity.
The horizon of renewable energy
Beyond domestic efforts, the MENA region is positioning itself as a global player in the renewable energy market. Initiatives such as the green ammonia market highlight the region's commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions. The region’s market volume of green ammonia used for power generation and transportation was expected to increase significantly in the next several years.The Middle East and North Africa region is making notable strides in integrating renewable energy into its energy mix. While there are encouraging developments, challenges persist in fully realizing the potential of renewables. The dominance and abundance of fossil resources are one of the leading obstacles to the energy sector’s swift transition. The MENA region is on a path toward a more sustainable energy future that requires forward-looking governments with ongoing commitment and practical solutions to navigate the complexities of the transition.
