Fairly Traded Products Market in the U.S. - Statistics & Facts

The fairly traded products market, especially Fairtrade International, has experienced substantial growth over the past decade. The estimated retail sales of Fairtrade International products has grown globally from 830 million euros in 2004 to about 5.9 billion euros in 2014. The United States in particular generated about 309 million euros from Fairtrade International product retail sales in 2013; a significant decline compared to the 2011 figures due to the fact that Fair Trade USA withdrew its membership from Fairtrade International on December 31, 2011. As a result, approximately 260 million pounds of Fair Trade USA produce was imported into the United States in 2015 as oppose to just 71.52 million pounds in 2011 when the organization still belonged to Fairtrade International.

U.S. consumers have also began to adopt this trend; 25 percent tend to agree with the fact that organic fairly traded food and beverages are worth paying a little extra for.

The objective of the fairly traded products initiative is to enable sustainable development and community empowerment that will not only benefit the farmers and workers, but the consumers and the Earth as well.
