For Turkey’s top players, textile and apparel production is clearly a profitable business. Overall, there are around 20 thousand textile manufacturers and 52 thousand wearing apparel manufacturers in Turkey, who generate an annual turnover of around 30 billion euros and 22 billion euros respectively. Among those most successful are Sanko Tekstil Isletmeleri, Gülsan Sentetik Dokuma Sanayi and Kipas Mensucat Isletmeleri, responsible for textile manufacturing. These companies made a respective 1.74 billion, 1.2 billion and 801 million Turkish lira in production-based sales in 2016. The leading apparel manufacturers in the country, meanwhile, are Lidersan Sağlık ve Gıda Ürünleri and Hugo Boss Tekstil Sanayi, generating 629.7 million and 576.1 million Turkish lira, respectively, in that same year.
As well as the successful manufacturing and trade industries, Turkey’s retail market for textiles and clothing is also strong. Since 2002, consumer spending on such items has increased considerably, with households spending a total of approximately 3.36 million Turkish lira per month on clothing and 413.4 million lira per month on household textiles in 2017. Given that there are over 31 thousand stores specializing in selling textiles in the country and 53 thousand stores selling clothing, the retail sector is also a key area for employment. In 2015, these stores employed 45 thousand and 215 thousand people, respectively.
