
The latest reports point to approximately 65 percent of the renewable energy produced in Spain being used in electricity generation, although thermal energy and biofuels also contribute significantly to the development of this sector. With regards to electricity, renewable generation reached a share of 37.5 percent in 2019, with installed renewable power exceeding that of non-renewable for the first time. Most recently, energy from clean resources accounted for 50.1 percent of the country's electrical power, which is equivalent to approximately 55.4 thousand megawatts of renewable capacity.
Concerning the various renewable technology used to generate electricity, hydropower has traditionally been the main resource of renewable energy in Spain. In 2009, however, this technology was surpassed by wind power, which has ranked first ever since and held a share of approximately 55.5 percent of renewable generation in 2019. Additionally, solar energy has registered record-breaking values in recent years, with photovoltaic and thermal generation reaching about 9.24 thousand and 2.3 thousand gigawatts per hour, respectively.
