Energy sector in the Netherlands - Statistics & facts

In line with the European Union’s Green Deal, the Dutch government is targeting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 95 percent by 2050. Apart from a focus on greater energy efficiency, the Netherlands hopes to lower its dependency on emission-intensive energy sources such as coal and natural gas. The government’s 2019 Climate Agreement focuses on the sectors electricity, industry including agriculture, the built and natural environment, and transportation. The Netherland’s primary energy production has decreased in recent years, falling to some 37 million metric tons of oil equivalent. Gases are the main fuel type produced in the country, while renewables only account for some 15 percent.

Electricity market

As the primary fuel production suggests, the Netherland’s power mix is largely shaped by natural gas and manufactured gases. In 2018, 61.19 terawatt hours of electricity were generated using these fossil fuels. Meanwhile, the share of renewables in electricity generation has increased to 15.1 percent. Household prices for electricity have been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and fell to a low of 14.27 euro cents per kilowatt-hour during the first half of 2020. This was down from 20.55 euro cents per kilowatt hour paid on average by households in the latter half of 2019.

Energy import reliance

The Netherlands has become more dependent on energy imports in recent years. Between 2010 and 2018, the dependency rate nearly doubled, reaching roughly 60 percent in the latter year. In 2018, the Netherlands energy imports climbed to over 53 million metric tons of oil equivalent. Imports are needed in order to satisfy the country’s per capita energy demand which was around 172 gigajoules.
