Energy in the Netherlands - statistics & facts

In line with the European Union’s Green Deal, the Dutch government is targeting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 95 percent by 2050. Apart from a focus on greater energy efficiency, the Netherlands hopes to lower its dependency on emission-intensive energy sources such as coal and natural gas. The government’s 2019 Climate Agreement focuses on the sectors electricity, industry including agriculture, the built and natural environment, and transportation. The Netherlands' primary energy production has decreased in recent years, falling to some 33.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent. Gas is the main fuel produced in the country, while renewables account for less than 20 percent.

Gas dominates electricity sector

As the primary fuel production suggests, the Netherlands' electricity generation is largely shaped by natural gas. In 2019, 72.83 terawatt hours of electricity were generated using this fossil fuel. Meanwhile, the Netherlands' share of electricity from renewable sources has increased to 26.4 percent in 2020. In the past two years, electricity prices for households were greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and fell to a low of 3.75 euro cents per kilowatt-hour during the first half of 2021. This was down from n average of 18.41 euro cents per kilowatt hour in the first half of 2019. However, the energy supply crisis which swept Europe in late 2021 is likely to result in a notable rise in average prices for the second half of 2021.

Energy import reliance

The Netherlands has become more dependent on energy imports in recent years. Between 2010 and 2020, the dependency rate doubled, reaching roughly 68 percent in the latter year. In 2019, the Netherlands' net energy imports climbed to nearly 57 million metric tons of oil equivalent.
