Natural gas consumption of the Netherlands 2005-2019
Between 2005 and 2010, natural gas consumption in the Netherlands increased to 46.8 billion cubic meters. This was the highest consumption rate during this period. Demand decreased in the following years and amounted to 34.1 billion cubic meters in 2015, but by 2019 had increased to 36.8 billion cubic meters.
Production declining
Natural gas production has seen an overall decline since 2006. In 2013, output had increased to 61.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) but decreased annually in the following years. By 2017 the production of natural gas in the Netherlands was half of that produced in 2013. Throughout Europe, the Netherlands is only behind Norway and the United Kingdom in terms of production.
Groningen Field
The Groningen gas field located in the north east of the Netherlands is one of the largest naturals gas reserves in the world. However, thousands of homes in the province have been damaged due to earthquakes caused by extraction. In 2014, the government decided to cut output from the field in half by 2022, with a target of zero extraction planned in the future.
