Travel and tourism in Hungary - statistics & facts

Budapest and Central Danube, the Lake Balaton, and Western Transdanubia are Hungary’s most popular tourist regions, attracting millions of travelers each year who visit numerous thermal spas, wine regions, and enjoy the national cuisine. Even though the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a negative impact on the travel and tourism sector, Hungary’s revenue from travel and tourism is expected to reach 944 million U.S. dollars in 2021.

Inbound and domestic tourism

In 2019, over 61 million tourists visited Hungary out of which almost 17 million travelers made overnight trips. Hungary was most popular with people coming from Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Romania, as over one million overnight trips were made to Hungary from each of these countries. International tourists visiting Hungary spent over two trillion forints in 2019, which was the highest figure recorded over the past years. By comparison, Hungarians spent approximately 393 billion forints on domestic trips during the same period. When asked about the main motivation for taking domestic trips, most Hungarians mentioned transiting, shopping, and visiting friends and relatives.

Accommodation opportunities

Travelers visiting Hungary have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from Airbnb to guest houses and pensions, to luxurious hotels. In recent years, the number of accommodation establishments had increased in Hungary, amounting to over four thousand in 2019. In the same year, over six million international and more than seven million domestic arrivals were recorded in Hungarian tourist accommodation.

Tourism during COVID-19

As in many other countries, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak of 2020 had a serious effect on the travel and tourism industry in Hungary, bringing international tourism to a standstill and limiting domestic travel opportunities as well. According to the findings of a survey conducted in May 2020, approximately 30 percent of Hungarians planned on taking their vacation in their country, while 17 percent of respondents intended to travel both domestically and abroad. Considering inbound tourism during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as of June 2020, 345 thousand arrivals were counted at travel accommodation establishments, which represents a decrease of 75 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
