Travel and tourism in Hungary - statistics & facts

Budapest and Central Danube, the Lake Balaton, and Western Transdanubia are Hungary’s most popular tourist regions, attracting millions of travelers each year who visit numerous thermal spas, wine regions, and enjoy the national cuisine. Even though the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a negative impact on the travel and tourism sector, Hungary’s revenue from travel and tourism is expected to reach 1,068 million U.S. dollars in 2022.

Inbound and domestic tourism

In 2021, nearly 37 million tourists visited Hungary out of which 7.9 million travelers made overnight trips. Hungary was most popular with people coming from Germany and Austria, as approximately one million overnight trips were made to Hungary from these countries. International tourists visiting Hungary spent 1.05 trillion forints in 2020, which was the lowest figure recorded over the past years. By comparison, Hungarians spent approximately 270 billion forints on domestic trips during the same period. When asked about the main motivation for taking domestic trips, most Hungarians mentioned transiting, shopping, and visiting friends and relatives.

Accommodation opportunities

Travelers visiting Hungary have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from Airbnb over guest houses and pensions, to luxurious hotels, such as the Four Seasons Hotel and the New York Palace. As of 2020, hotels accounted for the majority of guest nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments, followed by private accommodation providers. During the same year, Hungarians spent 6.5 million nights in hotels during domestic trips, while interantional tourist accounted for 2.9 million overnight stays.

Tourism during COVID-19

As in many other countries, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak of 2020 had a serious effect on the travel and tourism industry in Hungary, bringing international tourism to a standstill and limiting domestic travel opportunities as well. Even though the tourism industry underwent a slight recovery by the next year, nearly haf of Hungarians did not plan on going on a vacation and 37 percent expected to only travel domestically. According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2021, 15 percent of Hungarians stated that the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation was the most influential factor when it came to choosing their vacation destination.
