Germany had the highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe in 2019 with over 15 percent of adults in the country diagnosed with a type of diabetes. While Portugal reported around 14 percent of adults had diabetes in that year. The majority of European countries have a prevalence rate of diabetes of approximately seven or eight percent. Diabetes can put a heavy economic burden on health systems in Europe. Due to the nature of universal healthcare in European countries, the cost burden will not be passed onto the patients. For example, in Switzerland, almost 12 thousand U.S. dollars was spent on healthcare per person living with diabetes. In the UK, France, and Germany around five thousand U.S. dollars was spent per person with diabetes per year. Hospital admissions due to diabetes in Europe was highest in Lithuania in 2019, at 227 per 100,000 inhabitants. Admissions were also over 200 per 100,000 in Turkey, Germany, and Slovakia. Sufferers of diabetes have a much greater risk of a lower leg amputation. In Austria and Portugal, there were over 11 lower extremity amputations among diabetes patients per 100,000 population in 2019.
