Tropical fruit industry in Thailand - statistics & facts

The tropical fruit industry in Thailand is prominent owing to several factors such as geography and tropical climate. The terrain conditions in Thailand also differ as per region, allowing the production of a variety of tropical fruits. Undoubtedly, the tropical fruit industry in Thailand has been expanding, as seen from the rising production index in recent months, amounting to 231.76 index points as of April 2023. Some of Thailand’s most exported fruits based on value as of March 2022 include durian, young coconut, longan, and pomelo. Of these, durians were exported the most, amounting to over 1.7 million Thai baht that month.

The landscape of Thailand’s tropical fruit industry

Both fresh and processed tropical fruits are some of the major contributors to the thriving agricultural sector in Thailand. Currently, Thai farmers grow around 57 types of tropical fruits on approximately 1.2 million hectares of land. Additionally, Thailand produced around 11 million metric tons of tropical fruits with an annual export value of over 265 billion Thai baht. In 2020, Thailand ranked fifth for the production volume of certain tropical fruits in the Asia Pacific region, following China and Pakistan. Thailand's most produced tropical fruits include durians, mangosteen, lychee, mangoes, and rambutans. As of April 2023, Mangoes had the highest production index among other types of fruits, amounting to 630.54 index points. As for exports, Thailand’s main exported tropical fruits are usually durians, longans, and mangosteens. The export value of tropical fruits in Thailand amounted to almost 58 billion Thai baht in April 2023 alone.

The role of the Eastern Fruit Corridor (EFC) in Thailand’s tropical fruit industry

The agriculture sector contributes significantly to Thailand's gross domestic product (GDP), with the tropical fruit industry playing a major role in it. Hence, the Eastern Fruit Corridor was introduced as the main project for agricultural development in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development plan. The EEC development plan is a national project aimed at transforming economic, physical, and social development in three eastern provinces: Rayong, Chonburi, and Chachoengsao. With the implementation of the Eastern Fruit Corridor, certain progress should be achieved, including understanding the market demand, implementing a modern trading system, investing in blast freezers and modern cold storage facilities, and organizing the membership system of fruit growers and cooperatives participating in the project. If the Eastern Fruit Corridor is successful, the position of Thailand’s tropical fruit industry should be enhanced and strengthened on a global scale.
