Austria No. 1 for Renewable Electricity Generation in the EU
According to Eurostat, electricity generation from renewable energy sources contributed 21.8 percent to total electricity generation in the European Union in 2011. Interestingly, there is a massive variation between countries across Europe when it comes to renewable electricity consumption.
Austria leads the way with an impressive 66 percent. Sweden comes second with 59.6 percent while Portugal rounds off the top three with 56.5 percent. The island nations of Cyprus and Malta come second last and last respectively. In 2011, the share of electricity from renewable energy sources in Cyprus was 3.4 percent. In Malta, it was just 0.1 percent.
