According to a new report from Europol, the EU saw a total of 1,002 arrests for terrorism offences in 2016. The number of people arrested on suspicion of Islamist terrorism offences rose for the third year in a row. There were 395 such arrests in 2014, 687 in 2015 and 718 last year. France had 429 jihadist arrests last year, far ahead of second placed Spain's 69. Belgium, well known as a source of ISIS foreign fighters in Syria, came third with 62 arrests.
