Industry revenue of “casinos (except casino hotels)“ in the U.S. 2011-2023

The increasing popularity of gambling in the U.S. comes as no surprise as more than half of the leading global casino companies are based out of America. Casinos which are popular among the Americans and international tourists alike, make up the largest part of the commercial gaming segment. According to the American Gaming Association, the tax revenue from commercial casinos has increased in almost all states since 2014. The increase in disposable income and tourist inflow are the two main factors driving industry revenue over the last few years, a trend which is likely to continue in the short to medium term as well.

Tourists arrival drives casino revenues in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada, which is home to several of the largest casinos in the world, ranked among the top five international tourist destinations during 2017-2018. With more than 70% of the visitors arriving into the city trying their luck in casinos, it comes as no surprise to see the state generating the highest gross revenue of casino in 2018.

Macao surpassed Las Vegas

Macao, popularly known as the “Las Vegas of Asia", has become an increasingly popular casino destination in recent years. Along with Hong Kong, it is one of two Special Administrative Regions (S.A.R.) in China, both allowing the legalization of gambling. Macao's casinos generated almost 33 billion U.S. dollars in gross revenue in 2017, compared to that of 12 billion U.S. dollars generated in Las Vegas that year.

Land based casinos on a decline

The casino industry has exhibited numerous transformations over the last decade primarily due to technological advancements including the online platform and commencement of crypto currency. In fact, the recent popularity of online gambling sites has put a brake on the number of casinos since 2016 which was enjoying a year-over-over increase since 2010.
