Booking channels used by Germans for holiday trips 2019

In 2018, around 42 percent of German travelers booked their holiday trip online, compared to 26 percent who used this same booking method in 2010. The trend is clear: online bookings are on the rise, though roughly the same share of travelers booked their trip during a face-to-face conversation, for example with a travel agent.

Plan ahead

Germans enjoy going away for a vacation, but for many, a large part of this enjoyment is also the planning phase of the trip. Typically plenty of time and effort is invested in research and decision-making before the actual bookings (travel tickets, accommodation, tours, any additional services or transport) take place, though the availability of online travel portals has certainly both simplified the process and offered consumers access to more choice. Most German holidaymakers booked a holiday package or a customized tour, as well as accommodation in advance. Among those booking their trip online, travel comparisons on booking portals, as well as hotel websites were preferred. Meanwhile, offline, putting a trip together was completed with the help of a travel agency or a tour operator.

Plan well

In 2019, German holidaymakers went on over 70 million vacation trips. Favorite vacation activities included visiting cultural and historical attractions, spending time in nature and going on walks. When researching and preparing for a trip, a part of the process is also considering the impact of current threats, such as terror attacks and political conflicts, on vacation plans. In Germany, travelers mainly refrained from visiting countries that were politically unstable and would only plan for countries declared safe.
