African bauxite production 2009-2018 Africa produced some 58.65 million metric tons of bauxite in 2018. Guinea is by far the largest producer of bauxite in Africa, having produced 55 million metric tons in 2018. Bauxite ore is the main source of aluminum worldwide. It contains alumina (in addition to other compounds), which is the starting material for the smelting of aluminum.
