Mean annual PM2.5 air pollution levels in China 2010-2017

The mean annual concentration level of PM2.5 particles in China dropped moderately in recent years. It amounted to 52.7 micrograms per cubic meter in 2017. To target the air pollution problems caused by rapid industrialization and high energy consumption, the Chinese government released strict action plans with specific PM2.5 reduction targets for different economic regions. Coal consumption was cut down in China according to the new measures.

Supplementary notes

The measure is defined as the average level of exposure of a nation's population to concentrations of suspended particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter. The figure is calculated by weighting mean annual concentrations of PM2.5 by population in both urban and rural areas.

Figures are retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).
