People of color make up around 42 percent of the overall U.S. population, but represented 52 percent of those living in counties with at least one failing grade for ozone and/or particle pollutions between 2020 and 2022. On average, Black and Latino Americans are more concerned about air pollution than white Americans.

The American Lung Association defines people of color as "anyone Hispanic or non-Hispanic black, Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, or two or more races". Figures are based on 2021 county population estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.
