Classification of education in Italy 2019-2020, by duration

As of 2019/2020, the Italian education system is divided into: nursery, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school. The compulsory education starts with elementary school and relates to scholars aged between six and 16 years. Children usually attend elementary school for five years, before attending middle school. Students normally attend middle school for three years. Subsequently, high school begins. High schools can relate to different forms of education: lyceums (upper secondary schools), technical and professional (or vocational) schools.
