Italy: classification of education by duration 2022

The Italian education system is divided into: nursery, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school. Compulsory education in Italy begins at the age of six in elementary school and lasts until students leave high school at the age of 16. Children usually attend elementary school for five years, before attending middle school for three years and then, finally, high school. High schools can relate to different forms of education: lyceums (upper secondary schools), technical, and professional (or vocational) schools. Instead of high school, students can also choose to attend vocational trainings which can last for four years.
