Freight volume traded across the Brenner Pass in Italy 2017, by mode of transport
In 2017, roughly 50 million metric tons of freight traveled through the Brenner Pass, on the border between Italy and Austria. Of these, 36 million were transported by road, and 14 million by rail. Since the Roman time, the Brenner pass has been one of the most important routes connecting Southern and Northern Europe. Currently under construction, the Brenner Base Tunnel is expected to increase the capacity of the railway line and thus decrease pollution from road freight transport.
