Freight volume traded across the Swiss border in Italy 2017, by mode of transport

About 39 million metric tons of freight traveled through the border between Italy and Switzerland in 2017. Of these, 11.7 million were transported by road, and 27.2 million by rail. There were four main crossing points along the Italo-Swiss border: Great St Bernard, Simplon, Gotthard, and San Bernandino. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, opened in 2016, greatly increased the freight transport capacity through the Swiss Alps.
