Use of psychoactive substances in Belgium 2018, by region
Cannabis was the most consumed psychoactive substance in Belgium in 2018. Whilst seven percent of Belgians consumed this substance in 2018, over 12 percent of Belgians living in the Brussels-Capital Region had consumed cannabis in the year. Regional differences were, therefore, found across the country. Cocaine and ecstasy were the following most common substances consumed by Belgians in 2018, although to a much lesser extent. In 2018, over one percent of Belgians consumed either one of these drugs. However, in the population of the Brussels-Capital Region, higher figures emerged once again. Whilst drug consumption was at its highest in the Brussels-Capital Region, the lowest numbers were found in Wallonia, for the exception of cannabis, methamphetamines, and new psychoactive substances (NPS).
