In 2021, the largest planted area of oil palm in Indonesia was in Riau province, with 2.86 million hectares. Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer and exporter in the world. However, palm oil production in Indonesia has been related to ecological and social issues. About 1.23 million hectares of palm oil plantations in the Riau province in 2021 were located in a forested area.
