Indonesia: oil palm growing areas under New Planting Procedure

In 2021, around 14.16 thousand hectares of new oil palm plantings were carried out under the RSPO New Planting Procedure. Indonesia is the world's largest producer of palm oil. Growing awareness of the environmental impact of oil palm monoculture has resulted in some efforts to make oil palm cultivation more sustainable.

According to the source, new planting procedure provides guidelines from the RSPO on how and under what conditions new oil palm plantings should be carried out. New oil palm plantings starting January 1, 2010, must be in accordance with the RSPO Procedures for New Plantings (NPP). New oil palm plantings in the context of these procedures mean lands planned or proposed for oil palm plantings but upon which no work towards that end has commenced as at January 1, 2010.
