Switzerland and Luxembourg were also in the top ten countries, each having an FDI stock in Romania worth over 3.9 billion euros. However, when it comes to the ultimate investing country, which is represented by the entity at the top of the ownership chain, in control of most assets, The Netherlands only ranked sixth, with an FDI stock of approximately 4.3 billion euros. The ultimate investing country for Romanian companies was Germany, totaling an FDI stock of almost 13.8 billion euros as of 2020.

A direct investment abroad, or an outward direct investment, is a type of FDI in which a domestic company expands its operations abroad. In 2020, Romania’s direct investment abroad stock totaled around 2.4 billion euros. The country where Romanian companies chose to invest the most was Cyprus, with a stock worth nearly half a billion euros. It was followed by the Republic of Moldova and Italy, with investments worth nearly 300 million euros in each country.
