Corruption perception index of Romania 2020

This statistic shows the corruption perception index score of Romania from 2012 to 2020. The index itself is a composite indicator that includes data on the perception of corruption in areas such as bribery of public officials, kickbacks in public procurement, embezzlement of state funds, and effectiveness of governments' anti-corruption efforts. The highest possible score in perception of corruption is 0, whereas a score of 100 indicates that no corruption is perceived in the respective country. Since 2012, Romania's index score has fluctuated and remained at 44 points in 2020. This score made Romania be the country with the second highest CPI in the European Union, after Bulgaria.

Corruption crimes

In 2019, there were nearly 400 cases of corruption based on Law no.78/2000, brought before the Romanian courts. Other corruption crimes based on the New Criminal Code, such as giving bribery, requesting or accepting bribery, traffic of influence and buying influence, registered a slight decrease compared to the previous years. Consequently, the number of defendants sent to trial for corruption offenses also dropped by nearly half in 2019 compared to 2016.

Public opinion on corruption

According to a survey conducted in 2019, on main reasons why young people decide to leave Romania, over one third of respondents outlined that it was because of the high level of corruption in the country. Moreover, a Special Eurobarometer on Corruption also showed that eight out of ten Romanians considered corruption to be a widespread problem in the country.
