Japan: number of foreign residents by nationality 1984-2022

Nearly 762 thousand people from China lived in Japan as of 2022. Chinese nationals overtook Koreans as the largest minority in the country in 2007. The Vietnamese population recorded strong growth recently, as many people from Vietnam entered Japan as participants of the technical intern training program or as students.
