The Netherlands was the United Kingdom's main destination for plastic waste exports in 2022, receiving 24.5 percent of total shipments. The Netherlands has emerged as a leading plastic waste export destination for the UK in recent years. Ranking in second place was Turkey, accounting for some 19 percent of the UK's plastic waste exports.
Up until recently, developing countries were typically the main export destination for UK plastic waste, but export bans to China and changes to the Basel Convention have seen shipments to non-OECD countries drop significantly.
