China: enterprise export order index 2021

In the fourth quarter of 2021, 48.7 percent of surveyed enterprises expected increasing export orders. Usually, the judgement of entrepreneurs followed an annual seasonality by reaching their height in the second quarter of every year and their low in the first quarter. These fluctuations ranged from around 40 percent up to around 50 percent. The first quarter of 2020 illustrated the impact of COVID-19.

A diffusion index reflects entrepreneurs’ anticipation of the export orders of the firms compared with the previous quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of entrepreneurs who considered “export orders increased” which is weighted with the value 1 and that “both export orders remained unchanged” which is weighted with the value 0.5. Negative export order judgements are assigned the weight of 0. Finally, the multiplication results are added up.

In this table the figures were rounded to one decimal place. Possible discrepancies between year-on-year or quarter-on-quarter changes calculated from the figures and those published in the report were mainly due to rounding.
