New gas pipelines' capital costs 2023, by region
Europe is spending more on future gas pipeline extensions than any other region. As of 2023, gas pipelines under development had racked up a combined capital expenditure of an estimated 132.4 billion U.S. dollars. Overall, the total value of new gas pipeline capital costs worldwide stood at 723 billion U.S. dollars. As the number of financial institutions writing up oil and gas exit strategies is growing, long-term investments in fossil fuel infrastructure have come under scrutiny, increasing fears these investments may end up stranded in the not-too-far future.
