Global natural gas consumption has been steadily rising and peaked in 2021 at over four trillion cubic meters.
The United States is the biggest producer of emissions from natural gas combustion worldwide, and has been for a number of decades. In 1960, the U.S. emitted 630 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) from gas use and by 2022 emissions had increased to 1,744 MtCO₂. The second largest emitter during this period was Russia, which in 2022 released 811 MtCO₂ from gas use.
