In 2010, the electric sector was responsible for 74 percent of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in the United States. By 2020, the electric sectors share of SO2 emissions had fallen to 42 percent. The electric sectors share of U.S. CO2 emissions has reduced over the past decade, falling from 42 percent in 2020 to 33 percent in 2019.
The emission reductions across this sector can be attributed to the growth in renewable energy, as well as the gradual phase-out of coal.
