Net greenhouse gas emissions in the United States could drop to between 3.8 and 4.7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2030, given likely energy market, policy, and carbon removal outcomes
These would be reductions of between 29 and 42 percent below 2005 levels, when emissions stood at 6.7 GtCO₂e. The U.S. has set the target of reducing emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.
Projected net greenhouse gas emissions under emissions scenarios in the United States from 2022 to 2035
(in million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent)
Figures represent the minimum and maximum annual net US emissions given likely energy market, policy, and carbon removal outcomes. Ranges reflect uncertainty around future fossil fuel prices, economic growth, and clean energy technology costs.
Further information on the methodology and scenario pathways can be found in the report.
