Total income of the cinema public fund in Romania 2015-2020

The income of the cinema public fund in Romania peaked in 2017, at approximately 65 million Romanian lei. By 2020, the amount decreased to 48.27 million Romanian lei. In terms of gross box office revenues, Romania recorded rather constant values from 2017 to 2019, at around 260 million Romanian lei. However, because the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in 2020 led to the closing of cinemas in the country, the box office revenue dropped by nearly 200 million Romanian lei, totaling only 68 million Romanian lei.

Blockbusters

The movie The Fate of the Furious, released in 2017, registered the biggest opening weekend at the box office in Romania over the last ten years, amounting to 1.74 million U.S. dollars. It was followed by Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Endgame, each recording an opening weekend revenue of nearly one million U.S. dollars. When it comes to the highest grossing box office premiers in 2020, the leading movie, Miami Bici, had a gross box office premiere of 11.6 million Romanian lei. Moreover, in 2020, the Romanian movie Miami Bici was the most popular in the country, totaling half a million cinema admissions.

Film production

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year was one of the best years for the Romanian film production, in terms of numbers, awards and nominations. Specifically, there were 17 fiction films, as well as seven documentaries released in 2020. The documentary movie Collective was awarded the European Film Award for Best Documentary and was also nominated at the 93rd Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category.
