In 2019, energy consumption in the transport sector in Brazil amounted to 88 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe). At the beginning of 2020, before the COVID-19 outbreak, this figure was forecast to increase to over 90 Mtoe by the end of the year. However, in May 2020, after the lockdown measures ensued to control the spread of the virus, energy consumption in this sector was projected to decrease by more than 16 percent in comparison to 2019. The commercial sector was expected to experience the largest drop, both in comparison to 2019 and to a pre-COVID-19 scenario. Meanwhile, consumption in the residential sector was expected to increase in the post-COVID-19 scenario.
