Japan: ordinary steel products order volume by sector 2022

In 2022, metal dealers in Japan ordered more ordinary steel products than any other domestic sector, their orders increasing to approximately 11.3 million metric tons. Among the domestic consuming sectors, construction was leading with around 9.8 million tons. Orders for export added up to around 21.6 million tons, representing more than a third of the total demand.

As regulated by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), ordinary steel is carbon steel, which does not require heat treatment and contains silicon, manganese, phosphor, or sulfur.
Special steel, in contrast, is steel alloyed with other elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, or vanadium and has received heat treatment.
