United States: retail square feet in 2022, by type

Most of the retail real estate stock in the United States in 2022 was general retail space, defined as single-tenant freestanding commercial buildings with parking, such as drugstores, grocery stores, and streetfront urban retail stores. About 6.4 billion of the total 11.8 billion square feet of retail space fell in this category. This was also the retail real estate type with the lowest vacancy rate.
