The amount of money lost through damages caused by online banking fraud at city banks and other banks that were not classified as regional banks, shinkin banks, credit cooperatives, agricultural cooperatives, or labour banks in Japan amounted to 722 million Japanese yen in 2021. A surge in online banking frauds was detected in 2019, with many cases being related to SMS messages and e-mails impersonating financial institutions. The total amount of money lost through damages caused by online banking fraud in Japan in 2021 amounted to 820 million yen.
