In 2020, the share of Italian respondents who stated to trust the Catholic Church was 42 percent. Compared to 2009, the trust in the Church decreased. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI was serving as head of the Church. In 2013, Pope Benedict announced his resignation and was succeeded by Pope Francis. Pope Francis has, however, a higher trust than the previous Pope.
