Rail freight demand in key markets 2019
By 2019, China and Russia were the countries with the highest freight demand worldwide, at over 2,800 and 2,600 billion tonne-kilometers respectively. They were only surpassed by the total demand for all OECD member states, which reached iver 3,300 billion tonne-kilometers and dwarfed all other markets. By contrast European demand for freight was the smallest, at under 400 billion tonne-kilometers, despite Europe boasting a large railway network.
