The Asia-Pacific region accounted for 33.2 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2000. This was closely followed by North America, which accounted for 26.4 percent. However, in the following years emissions in Asia-Pacific saw considerable growth, and by 2020 represented more than half of global emissions. Meanwhile, North America's share of emissions had fallen to slightly over 15 percent. The Asia-Pacific region's share of total worldwide emissions are expected to continue rising in the coming decades, and by 2050 will account for approximately 60 percent of total emissions.
The rise in Asia-Pacific emissions has been fueled by the economic growth of China in recent decades. Since the turn of the century, emissions in China have increased substantially, and by 2019 China accounted for roughly 14 percent of cumulative carbon dioxide emissions produced since the industrial revolution began.
