In 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the resulting lockdowns and travel bans caused transportation-related emissions in the U.S. to plummet. The most dramatic reduction occurred in April of that year, when emissions dropped 34 percent, relative to April 2019, to 105 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO2). Emissions remained lower than pre-pandemic levels for the remainder of the year. Monthly emissions were higher in 2021, as restrictions eased across the country. However, emissions only returned to pre-pandemic levels in November of that year.
