Support of voting rights in local elections for foreigners living in France 1994-2021
In France, the foreign residents of European Union member states can vote and be elected in European and municipal elections on the grounds of their European citizenship. The extension of this right to vote to all local elections (i.e. regional and departmental elections in addition to municipal elections) is an issue that has long divided the French. In 1996, only 28 percent of the population supported this idea. Between this year and 2014, this proportion fluctuated between 28 and 59 percent, but has steadily increased since 2014, reaching 67 percent in 2021.
