In 2020, Switzerland imported the most flaring intensive oil in the world, at nine cubic meters per barrel of oil produced. By comparison, Japan imported the least flaring intensive oil in the world, at one cubic meter per barrel of oil produced. The gas flare equivalent per imported barrel is an important indicator to consider when investigating climate impact accountability along with limitation targets. This is due to the fact that manufacturing or exporting countries are exposed not only to gas flaring, but also other types of emissions and related climate impacts, which strengthens the argument for a shared responsibility for environmental monitoring.
