Volume of natural gas imported from Libya to Italy 2010-2018

The quantity of gas imported to Italy from Libya fluctuated over time. It may be assumed that the fall in Italian natural gas imports from Libya between 2010 and 2011 was due to the uprisings generated by the Arab Spring. Thereafter, the volume of gas imported from this country increased, without ever reaching the level of 2010 again. The amount of gas imported declined from 9.4 to roughly 4.5 billion standard cubic meters between 2010 and 2018.

Key natural gas suppliers

On the contrary, Russia became a key natural gas supplier for Italy. In 2018, Russia exported to Italy 12 billion standard cubic meters more than it exported in 2010. During the same year, Algeria was the second-largest natural gas supplier for Italy, even though they only regained its dominant role in recent years.

Imports of Liquified Natural Gas

Qatar was the third country from which Italy imported natural gas. More importantly, it was the major Italian supplier of liquified natural gas (LNG). LNG is natural gas that has been converted from gas into liquid through a cooling process in order to be transported and stored more easily.
