Unlike Medicaid income eligibility for adults in expanded states, which is usually 138% FPL, Medicaid or CHIP eligibility varies widely depending on the state and on the age of the child. This can range from as low as 142% FPL in Louisiana to 380% FPL in Iowa among 0 to 1 year old infants. Separate CHIP eligibility (for children whose household income is too high for Medicaid) is usually much higher in states that offer this as sometimes premiums and co-payments are required.
This statistic displays the Medicaid/CHIP income eligibility limits for children as a percent of the Federal Poverty Level as of January 1, 2023, by state and age.

The MAGI-based rules generally include adjusting an individual’s income by an amount equivalent to a 5% FPL disregard. Eligibility levels are reported as percentage of the FPL. The 2022 FPL for a family of three was $23,030.
