Sports participation refers to active participation in physical and sporting activities during leisure time. Between 2020 and 2021, sports participation in the United Kingdom (UK) experienced a decline, most likely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic confining people to their homes for extended periods of time. Over that period, non-professional team sports had to stop their activity to curb the spread of the virus and many gyms and leisure centers also closed their doors for several months. In 2022, the sports participation rate in the UK was expected to reach almost 63 percent.
